This is one of my favorite stories and I am happy that it came out in a Young Readers Edition. I teach 5th Grade and the original movie is just on the edge of being able to watch it with my students. This book will definitely be on my "Read Aloud" list this year. It is so heartwarming, with a message that will stay with you for a long time. Trevor is such a likable, no nonsense kid, with a big heart. His plan seems so simple, yet, as adults, our learned skepticism fills us with doubt and our faith in others is minimal. This story becomes our inspiration to our Genius Hour projects, inspiring kids to make a difference in their world today. No idea is too small or too simple, it just takes a strong heart and mind to make it happen. I would recommend this book in any classroom. Our students are our future and this book is a powerful influence for students to make it happen.

Pay It Forward Catherine Ryan Hyde 9780743412025 Books Reviews
How can you not like the story? Tried and true. It's a hopeful book. But it boggs down till this reader who usually doesn't want a book to be done, wanted it over. There's a new youth version out that probably bypasses some of the light sex; maybe that's better. I hope so, because the message is clear and oh so very much needed. I actually like Catherine Ryan Hyde's more recent novels better. She writes a good story and the moral is always there, but couched in love and experience and humor. She seems to love animals and her animal characters are also well drawn. Charming is what they are. Charming. But this one lasted too long.
"Pay it Forward"
Well, for all the hype about this novel, I liked Hyde's other novels, "Don't Let Me Go" and "Where We Belong", far better as stories as well as writing and entertainment value. But "Pay It Forward" was a good story written by one of my favorite writers.
I have to say that the story was good, it was interesting, but the novel had some things going against it in my view. CRH wrote the story in an odd English grammar method with the narrators of various sections being various characters at various times and in various grammatical tenses. A testament to the skill of the author is that I didn't throw it into the electronic landfill long before I finished it.
Like I've said, the story was good, the writing was good, ....just wish she'd written this one as well as she's written the others I've read. All that being said, I'm guessing that you'll find the story entertaining and a fun read. With Catherine Ryan Hyde, you almost can't go wrong.

Inspiring idea, but vey uninspiring characters and writing. I LOVED he idea and in the hands of another writer, I'm sure I would have loved the book, but I hated it. It says it's for ages 8 & up, but it is WAY to mature for an 8 year old with cussing and constant references to sexual relationships, both straight and gay.
The author seems to have a liberal agenda. (Yes, I admit to being conservative.). If the book had been better written and the liberal views had served an actual purpose beyond indoctinization, I would happily have read the book. But as it is, I can see no purpose.
As mentioned by another reviewer, Trevor is the only likable character and so little of the book is told from his point of view that you really don't get to know him well at all.
The author switches narrators constantly. New characters suddenly show up and you're expected to accept them like best friends whose past you know and understand. And I found myself constantly asking myself 'Do people really think like this?!' It all felt very disjointed and unnatural.
Again, I LOVE the premise of this book. But in reality, the book was very disappointing.
I can't write much right now. I'm crying and I don't want to stop right now. It just seems right.
THAT is how amazing this book is. I usually write about how talented THIS author is, how she makes me actually become the characters. I speak of her uncanny ability to make me feel their feelings, see life through their eyes.
Today, I simply say that I felt it in my heart. For that, I'm grateful to her. She made me believe.
Catherine Ryan Hyde, thank you. I will.
What a beautiful concept.
I have been trying to live my life around this idea for a while, I wish I had tried a little harder at times. It is such a simple concept, yet so hard
To accomplish as much as we would like to, all the time.
Trevor makes it look so easy. Just the fact that he believes he has failed is so human and so heart breaking.
I loved Reuben as a person, a teacher and Vietnam veteran. I really believe that most soldiers adhere to this concept just by the nature
Of their jobs. And the fact that he is also a teacher who challenges his students to come up with this particular project is so amazingly
Nurturing. We should all have someone in ours lives like Reuben and Trevor. This world would Be so much better for it. Let's all try it.
We have nothing to loose, and so much to gain.
Thanks, Ms Ryan Hyde for another unforgettable read.
I watched this movie when it came out many years ago, and loved it. The book is similar of course, but even more powerful, even more filled with appreciation of diversity and human understanding, and different enough that I couldn't be sure what to expect. Shifting narratives threw me now and then, trying to remember which characters were which, but they precisely fulfilled the author's intent of broadening the story through multiple perspectives. I've loved every book I've read by this author (which were included with Unlimited), so finally broke down and paid for this one. So glad I did! I've "been intending to begin" doing some charitable acts (not just donations), but this book, which touched me deeply over and over, has inspired me to get off my a$$. I will not only begin doing that ASAP, but will also start my own "pay it forward" chain! Catherine Ryan Hyde, thank you for bringing this light into the world!!! Readers, don't forget to read her introduction to this edition!!!
